Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that the nuclear power plant in the western Khmelnitskyi region was the likely target of a Russian drone attack early on Wednesday.
The attack injured 20 people.
The UN’s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, said drone blasts had no impact on the plant’s operations or grid connection. Several off-site radiation monitoring stations lost power.
The attack, according to Zelenskiy, is additional proof that Russia must be subjected to harsher sanctions.
He added that every Russian strike, particularly those bold enough to target nuclear power plants and other vital facilities, is evidence that pressure on the terrorist state is insufficient.
The regional governor, Serhiy Tyurin, stated in a Telegram statement that 1,700 structures were damaged as a result of the attack. This included 282 apartment buildings, more than 1,400 private homes, 41 educational institutions, and six healthcare facilities.
According to the Ukrainian military, their air force shot down all eleven Russian drones launched during the night. The minister of the interior said that the destruction was caused by blast waves and falling debris.
Russian drone and missile strikes on the Khmelnytskyi region are aimed at the nearby military airfield, according to analysts.
