The Armenian foreign ministry announced on Friday that Armenia has officially recognized a Palestinian state, becoming the most recent country to do so amid Israel’s opposition.
Armenia, according to a ministry statement, is in favor of a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and supports a United Nations resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza.
In response to Armenia’s recognition of a Palestinian state, the Israeli foreign ministry summoned the Armenian ambassador for a “serious reprimand,” a ministry spokesperson said in a statement.
In a statement, the Palestinian Authority’s presidency stated that this recognition is beneficial for preserving the two-state solution, which faces systematic challenges, and for promoting security, peace, and stability for all parties involved.
Last month, Israel withdrew its ambassadors from Madrid, Dublin, and Oslo as a result of the official recognition of a Palestinian state by Spain, Ireland, and Norway.
