Israel’s security cabinet granted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government the authority to determine the timing and method of a response to the rocket attack that resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals, including children, at a football field in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Saturday.
Israel blamed the attack on the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.
Hezbollah has rejected responsibility for Saturday’s attack on Majdal Shams, the deadliest in Israel or territories annexed by Israel since the attack in Gaza on October 7 by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
Israeli jets bombed targets in southern Lebanon during the day on Sunday, as Israel has announced its intention to retaliate against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
On Sunday, the White House blamed Hezbollah for the Majdal Shams strike. “This attack was conducted by Lebanese Hezbollah. It was their rocket, and launched from an area they control,” it said.
The Democratic presidential candidate, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, stated through her national security adviser that her staunch support for Israel’s security is unshakable.
