President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Sunday for the first time that combat aircraft F-16 fighter jets have arrived in Ukraine, marking the beginning of a new era for the country’s Air Force.

Since the start of the conflict, Ukraine has been advocating for its allies to transfer the highly sought-after jets in order to safeguard its skies from Russian missiles. Russia maintains air superiority over Ukraine.

The F-16s provide a substantial enhancement to Kyiv’s weaponry. The F-16s are capable of intercepting missiles, taking on enemy planes, attacking ground targets, and providing air cover for troops.

Speaking at an airbase outside of Kyiv, Zelensky stated, “We conducted numerous meetings and negotiations to enhance the capabilities of our aviation and air defense.”

He said, “At present, F-16s are based in Ukraine. “I am proud of all of our men, who have already begun operating these aircraft for our country and are in the process of mastering them.”

Zelensky declined to discuss combat missions or F-16 numbers in Ukraine.

The U.S. pledged to authorize the transfer of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine last August.
