Russian forces announced on Sunday that they had fully controlled a town in eastern Ukraine in their ongoing push toward the strategically vital city of Pokrovsk and their goal of penetrating the Ukrainian defensive front lines.
Russian forces are making advances in eastern Ukraine with the goal of capturing the entirety of the Donbas. Since their invasion in February 2022, they have taken control of approximately one-fifth of the country.
Russia’s defense ministry reports the capture of Novohrodivka, a town 12 km (7 miles) from Pokrovsk, a crucial rail and road hub for Ukrainian forces in the area.
The Ukrainian military’s general staff detailed the fighting in the Pokrovsk sector, including Novohrodivka, in a report released on Sunday night.
The report states that the Russians have repulsed 29 advances, and seven skirmishes remain ongoing. “Our troops are taking measures to maintain designated positions.”
Last week, President Vladimir Putin stated that Ukrainian forces had weakened Kyiv’s defenses along the front line and failed to halt Russia’s advance in eastern Ukraine as a result of their incursion into the Russian region of Kursk.
