South Korean Opposition Wants to Impeach Han

The Democratic Party (DP), South Korea’s primary opposition party, intends to proceed with the impeachment of acting president Han Duck-soo immediately, according to the party’s floor leader on Tuesday.

The Democratic Party’s (DP) floor leader, Park Chan-dae, announced this after Han postponed the approval of legislation to initiate a special counsel investigation into President Yoon Suk Yeol’s unsuccessful attempt for martial law.

Prime Minister Han has assumed the role of the suspended Yoon, who was impeached on December 14 and is currently awaiting a Constitutional Court review to determine whether to remove him or reinstate his authority.

“Acting president Han made it clear at today’s cabinet meeting that he would not greenlight the special prosecution law,” according to Park. “There is no way to interpret it other than that he is delaying time.”

Local media reported that they could decide when to submit a bill to impeach Han as early as Tuesday afternoon.
