The Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, met with Foreign Minister Park Jin on January 29. In light of the growing significance of the alliance between NATO and the Republic of Korea, the Secretary General expressed his pleasure at the establishment of the Republic of Korea’s Mission to NATO. Russia’s war with Ukraine and concerns about North Korea’s nuclear programme and reckless ballistic missile tests were on the agenda as the two leaders met.

On the second day (30 January 2023) of his two-day visit to South Korea, Stoltenberg met with President Yoon Suk Yeol. Consistent pressure on North Korea to end its reckless missile and nuclear activities was a consensus point between the Secretary General and President Yoon.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg lauded the Republic of Korea for its principled stance and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. He also talked about how transatlantic and Indo-Pacific security are linked and stressed how important it is for democracies with similar values to work together to protect the international rules-based order.

The Secretary General expressed enthusiasm for expanding collaboration with the Republic of Korea in areas such as cyber defense, technology, arms control and non-proliferation.
