During his three-day trip to the region, Biden made a short statement to the press in Warsaw, Poland, where he met with Eastern NATO leaders.

Moscow’s participation in New START, the last remaining nuclear arms reduction deal between the U.S. and Russia, has been suspended by Putin. It caps the number of long-range nuclear weapons at 1,550 for each side.

Biden told the leaders of the nations on the eastern flank. “You are aware of the stakes in this conflict. Not only for Ukraine, but also for the freedom of democracies across Europe and the globe.”

The New START treaty was signed in 2010 and extended for five years in 2021. It puts limits on how many long-range nuclear bombs Russia and the U.S. can have.
