China’s Fresh Taiwan Policy: Peaceful Reunification

Must read

On March 5, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang vowed both a peaceful reunification with Taiwan and a firm opposition to Taiwan’s independence.

A response from Taipei stated that Beijing must recognize the Taiwanese people’s dedication to democracy and freedom.

At the opening of China’s annual parliament meeting, Li said that Beijing supports the “one China” principle, which holds that Taiwan is a part of China, without making any direct threats of military action. “We need to work for the peaceful reunification of China and for better relations between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.”

In a reply to Li, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council said that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are “not subordinate to each other,” implying that Beijing should recognize this fact.
