Following Tuesday’s meeting with the Swedish parliament’s speaker, a Hungarian parliamentary delegation declared its support for Sweden’s NATO membership bid.
Some Hungarian lawmakers have expressed reluctance to support Sweden and Finland’s applications to join NATO, citing what they see as outright falsehoods from Stockholm and Helsinki about the health of democracy in Hungary.
However, the Hungarian delegation stated that the Swedish NATO membership would be approved by the Budapest parliament. “We support Sweden’s NATO membership,” Csaba Hende, deputy speaker of the Hungarian parliament, told TT.
In Brussels, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg praised the statements made by the Hungarian lawmakers. “They are sending a positive message and recommending ratification. So, of course, we still have some way to go, but we are making progress,” Stoltenberg said.
