The Chinese military has funded a research team that claims to have used AI to rapidly and accurately design the electrical layout of a warship, according to South China Morning Post.
According to the research group from China’s Ship Design and Research Centre, the AI designer only needed one day to finish a task that would have taken humans using the most cutting-edge computing tools nearly a year.
Due to the size and complexity of today’s warships, design errors are common and can necessitate extensive time spent finding and fixing them.
A group of researchers led by Luo Wei, a senior engineer at the ship design center, claimed that when they gave the AI designer more than 400 difficult tasks, it completed them all successfully.
The United States, among others, is growing increasingly concerned about China’s expanding military and its ability to produce warships. By 2025, China is set to have built and deployed over 400 warships.
