Biden Administration Seeks Congressional Approval For F-16 Sale To Turkey

The approval is likely contingent on Turkey's acceptance of NATO expansion and the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Greece

The sale of new F-16 jet fighters to Turkey for a total of $20 billion and the sale of F-35 warplanes to Greece would be the largest foreign weapon sales in recent years.

The potential sale is meant to encourage Turkey, which Ankara has blocked from joining NATO due to concerns about its ties to Kurdish separatist groups, to approve Finland and Sweden’s membership applications.

After Russia invaded Ukraine, two countries that had been neutral for decades finally decided to join NATO last year.

Turkey’s sales are above expectations. 40 brand-new planes and parts to refurbish 79 of Turkey’s current F-16s are part of the deal.
