The administration of President Joe Biden has permitted Ukraine to employ U.S.-manufactured weapons to launch an attack into Russia two U.S. officials and a source familiar with the matter indicated on Sunday.
For months, the White House has declined to grant Ukraine’s request for weapons, citing concerns that it would escalate the situation. Just as the request seemed to be on hold, Kyiv loudly protests the rejection and the Biden administration approves it.
According to sources who declined to disclose specifics due to operational security concerns, Ukraine intends to execute its initial long-range attacks in the near future. This represents a substantial departure from Washington’s policy regarding the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
Following months of pleading by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the move comes two months before the official start of President-elect Donald Trump on January 20.
A US official stated that Russia’s decision to deploy North Korean ground troops to support its own forces prompted the decision.
The U.S. State Department and the White House declined to provide a response.
Although President-elect Donald Trump may think he can negotiate peace, the stakes in the conflict he will inherit have just increased.
