President Biden paid a surprise visit to the capital city of Kyiv on January 20, only a few days before the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

At 0915 GMT on Sunday, Biden left Joint Base Andrews aboard an Air Force jet and flew overnight to the United States’ Ramstein Air Base in Germany and then to Rzeszow in southeastern Poland. President Biden traveled by train to Kyiv, a journey of ten hours. On Monday morning around 0600 GMT, the train finally arrived in Kyiv.

Air raid sirens wailed as President Biden walked the streets of Kyiv with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but the high-stakes trip still sent a message of the United States’ continued support for Ukraine’s fight against Russian invasion.

Biden arrived in Warsaw late Monday after visiting Kyiv to meet Polish President Andrzej Duda to discuss international support for Ukraine and to express gratitude to Poland for facilitating the delivery of military and humanitarian aid.
