Israeli forces have seized a buffer zone in southern Syria and attacked Syrian army and air bases via airstrikes overnight. According to Syrian security sources, they reached a point about 25 km (16 miles) southwest of Damascus on Tuesday.
Syrians, regional countries, and world powers are anxious about the potential consequences of Israel’s military operation into Syria, which occurred two days after a rebel alliance’s lightning overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad.
Israeli forces have reportedly crossed into Syrian territory at Qatana, a location 10 km east of the demilitarized zone that divides the Golan Heights from Syria, according to a Syrian security source.
Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Egypt have all condemned the incursion. Saudi Arabia stated that the action would undermine Syria’s prospects of reestablishing security.
Overnight, Israeli airstrikes continued to target military installations and airbases throughout Syria, resulting in the destruction of dozens of helicopters and jets, as well as Republican Guard assets in and around Damascus.
Regional security sources said that the Syrian army’s assets had been completely depleted by the approximate total of 200 raids.
Israel has stated that it will stay out of the Syrian civil war and that the buffer zone acquisition was a defensive measure.
