Palestinian health officials reported that the death toll from Israeli strikes since the outbreak of war in October had surpassed 25,000 as street battles and assaults raged throughout the Gaza Strip on Sunday.
The health ministry of Gaza reports that the past twenty-four hours have seen the death of 178 Palestinians, making it one of the deadliest days of the conflict to date. The Israeli military reported one soldier killed in combat.
Multiple locations witnessed fighting between Israeli forces and Hamas fighters, ranging from the northern city of Jabalia to the southern city of Khan Younis, the site of recent Israeli operations.
Heavy Israeli airstrikes have resumed over Khan Younis, located to the south of the Gaza Strip.
Israel said it had cleared much of northern Gaza of Hamas’ military network, and over 1 million residents have fled the bombardments. In the Jabalia refugee camp and other Gaza City areas, fighting continues.
“Israel’s military operations have spread mass destruction and killed civilians on a scale unprecedented during my time as secretary-general,” United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Sunday.
