Defense officials in Japan and South Korea are expected to reach an agreement early next month to link their radars through a U.S. system to share real-time data on North Korean ballistic missiles.

There is talk of a possible deal being made between the defense ministers of Japan, South Korea, and the United States on the eve of an upcoming Asian defense summit in Singapore.

As a result of North Korea’s unprecedented rate of ballistic missile launches over the past year, the three countries agreed in November to increase the rate at which they share intelligence. Both Japan and South Korea have their own separate radar systems that are connected to the United States’ but not to each other.

It will be the first meeting between the Japanese and South Korean defense ministers since November 2019, and it will take place on June 2-4 in Singapore, on the sidelines of the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue.
