Alexander Lukashenko, president of Belarus, said on Thursday that the Wagner group’s mutinous leader and his thousands of fighters were still in Russia. He also denied that President Putin would order Prigozhin’s murder.

Last month’s mutiny was put to rest with the help of Lukashenko’s negotiation; in exchange for Putin dropping charges, Prigozhin agreed to withdraw his mercenaries and relocate to Belarus.

However, Lukashenko said that Prigozhin and his fighters were still in Russia, comments that raised doubts about the deal. Even so, he stated that the agreement had been met, and he maintained his offer to host Wagner and would contact Putin.

Lukashenko of Belarus told reporters, “He is in Petersburg… maybe he went to Moscow this morning.”
