NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday that if China wishes to maintain good relations with the West, it must cease its support for Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Stoltenberg stated during a visit to Berlin that Beijing’s assistance was crucial to Moscow’s war effort because it sponsored the Russian war economy through the sharing of advanced technology.
“Last year, Russia imported 90% of its microelectronics from China, used to produce missiles, tanks, and aircraft. China is also working to provide Russia with improved satellite capabilities and imaging,” he said.
China declares its desire for amicable relations with the West. Concurrently, Beijing maintains its contribution to the most extensive armed confrontation in Europe since the Second World War, according to the NATO Secretary-General. “They cannot have it both ways,” he cautioned.
Stoltenberg warns Western allies against developing a reliance on China that is similar to their previous reliance on Russia.
“In the past, we made the mistake of becoming dependent on Russian oil and gas,” said the chief of the Western military alliance. “We must not repeat that mistake with China. Depending on its money, its raw materials, its technologies, dependencies make us vulnerable.”
