NATO is gearing up to send AWACS planes to Bucharest, Romania, to conduct surveillance missions. Planned to arrive on January 17th, 2023, the planes will help the Alliance keep an eye on Russian military activity and support the Alliance’s increased presence in the area.

“Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine continues to threaten peace and security in Europe,” said Oana Lungescu, a spokesperson for NATO. “There must be no doubt about NATO’s resolve to protect and defend every inch of Allied territory.”

NATO has deployed more fighters, surveillance planes, and tankers to eastern Europe as a direct response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. NATO AWACS have been conducting regular patrols over eastern Europe and the Baltic Sea region to monitor Russian aircrafts near NATO borders since February 2022.
