Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his Turkish counterpart and President Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on Wednesday to discuss Ukraine.
China appointed Wang as its new foreign minister on Tuesday, replacing former rising star Qin Gang, who was removed from office after a one-month absence less than half a year after assuming the position.
According to a Turkish foreign ministry source, Wang and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan discussed the current situation in Ukraine and the global financial system.
The United States and several European countries have asked China to exert pressure on Russia in an effort to end the conflict in Ukraine. In a 12-point peace plan released by China earlier this year, it includes demanding the safety of civilians and the recognition of the sovereignty of all nations.
Fidan and Wang also discussed the development of economic and trade ties between Türkiye and China, according to a source from the Turkish foreign ministry. They also discussed the “harmonisation of the initiatives of (China’s) Belt and Road and Middle Corridor” in addition to nuclear energy, agriculture, and civil aviation.
