Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed on Thursday his doubts about the ceasefire proposal brokered by the United States in the Ukraine war. He imposed strict conditions and demanded concessions from Kyiv, despite stating that he supported a truce in theory.
“We support the proposal to suspend hostilities; however, it is imperative that this ceasefire be directed toward a sustainable peace and address the underlying causes of the crisis,” Putin stated during a press conference, reiterating the Kremlin’s previous claim that the current Ukrainian government is a contributing factor to the crisis.
Putin proposed that Ukraine stop mobilizing and training its troops and that other nations stop supplying weapons to Kyiv during the ceasefire, at a time when Russian troops are advancing on almost all areas of combat contact.
He said the United States’ concept is “great and correct,” but he also admitted that there are numerous issues that require further discussion.
American special envoy Steve Witkoff arrived in Moscow to brief Kremlin officials on the peace plan at the same time the news conference was held.
Earlier this week, Ukrainian officials had engaged in discussions with their US counterparts in Saudi Arabia and had agreed to a 30-day ceasefire that would cover the entire front line.
