The Russian Navy has received the first of the nuclear submarine drones that were planned as part of Vladimir Putin’s strategic weapons program back in March of 2018.
According to TASS, Russia’s state news agency, the Poseidon has successfully completed its testing phase and will soon be deployed on the next-generation submarine Belgorod. The report does not say how many torpedoes are in the batch, but naval expert HI Sutton thinks that Belgorod can hold about six Poseidons.
NATO is concerned about Poseidon due to its ability to deliver nuclear and conventional warheads as well as cause tsunamis and pollute large bodies of water with radioactive materials.
