Russian forces launched an assault on the northeastern Kharkiv region of Ukraine, engaging in combat near the border town of Vovchansk as President Volodymyr Zelenskiy descibed intense fighting in that area on Sunday.
Moscow’s deployment of troops into the Kharkiv region on Friday established the northeastern front of a protracted conflict primarily in the south and east.
The second-largest city in Ukraine, Kharkiv, is 30 km (18 miles) from the Russian border.
In a report published after midnight, the Ukrainian General Staff stated that Russian forces had achieved tactical success, with 14 of the 22 attempted advances in the region still ongoing.
The Russian military reports that they have seized at least nine border villages in the Kharkiv region. Kyiv claims that it is fighting to reclaim the captured settlements and repel the attacks.
