Scholz Criticizes EU Partners For Weak Military Aid To Ukraine

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz urged allies to increase their efforts on Monday, stating that the majority of European Union member states were not supplying Ukraine with adequate weaponry to repel the Russian invasion.

Scholz emphasized the imperative for Europe to assume responsibility as the U.S. Congress stalled approval of American military assistance to Ukraine. He reiterated that the German government would continue to provide support to Kyiv for an indefinite period of time.

“Despite the magnitude of the German contribution, it will not suffice to guarantee the long-term security of Ukraine,” Scholz stated during a news conference held in Berlin.

“Therefore, I urge European Union allies to intensify their endeavors in regards to Ukraine.” He added, “The planned arms deliveries to Ukraine by the majority of EU member states are insufficient.”

Scholz said that, inasmuch as not all deliveries might be known, Berlin had requested the EU to confirm with individual member states which deliveries they intended to execute.

Germany currently ranks among the leading contributors to financial assistance and weaponry. It decided late last year to increase military aid to Ukraine by twofold to eight billion euros ($8.8 billion) by 2024.
