South Korean President Arrested After Prolonged Standoff

Must read

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been arrested for questioning, the country’s anti-corruption agency said. The detention is the latest development in a political crisis that has lasted for weeks, starting with last month’s shock martial law decree.

Yoon and investigators left his home in a motorcade on Wednesday morning, marking the first arrest of a sitting South Korean president.

Multiple criminal investigations into Yoon’s declaration have led to his alleged involvement in an insurrection, which carries a life sentence or the death penalty.

An official with the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials (CIO) informed reporters that Yoon had declined to respond to investigators’ questions or provide commentary as of Wednesday evening.

The embattled president had been hiding in his fortified home with his Presidential Security Service team for weeks, evading arrest amid multiple investigations and an impeachment trial.
