Taiwan’s Presidential Office recently held the island’s first-ever tabletop exercise simulating a military escalation in response to China’s resurgence of military threats.
Dozens of government agencies and civilian groups participated in the three-hour exercise on Thursday, according to unidentified sources.
Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in China’s military threats, such as this month’s massive naval deployment and the daily military exercises near democratic Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own despite Taipei’s rejection.
Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim and National Security Council Secretary-General Joseph Wu led the war game, which took place inside the Presidential Office in Taipei, sources said.
This year, China has exercised pressure on Taipei with two major drills around Taiwan, “Joint Sword – 2024A” in May and “Joint Sword – 2024B” in October.
