President Volodymyr Zelenskiy signed a bill on Tuesday reducing the age of mobilization for combat duty from 27 to 25 in an effort to increase Ukraine’s fighting strength in its war.
Legislators approved the bill in May 2023, bringing it to Zelenskiy’s table. Since Russia’s comprehensive invasion in February 2022, the country has been under martial law.
Due to a dearth of ammunition supplies, Ukrainian forces are experiencing a setback on the battlefield. Republicans in Congress have obstructed critical funding from the United States for several months, and the European Union has not fulfilled its commitment to deliver ammunition on time.
In December, the Ukrainian leader claimed that the then-commandant of the armed forces had made a request for the military to mobilize an additional 500,000 Ukrainians into the armed forces.
A sufficient argument regarding the necessity of the bill would convince Zelenskiy to sign it, he stated last winter.
