Ukraine said on Monday that it had requested humanitarian aid from the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to help with the situation in the Kursk region.
The Ukrainian army has maintained its presence in the Kursk region for more than a month since the assault began. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has claimed that Kiev has seized control of approximately 100 settlements.
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that he had directed his ministry to formally invite the UN and ICRC for humanitarian efforts in the Kursk region during his visit to the northeast Ukrainian region of Sumy on Sunday.
The Ukrainian army was providing humanitarian assistance and ensuring the safe passage of civilians in the Kursk region, according to him.
The ministry stated that it had requested the ICRC to oversee Ukraine’s adherence to the Geneva Conventions’ principles of international humanitarian law.
There was no immediate response from Moscow regarding the invitations. It was not immediately apparent whether or not the UN or ICRC had responded.
Russia’s state-owned The RIA news agency reported on Monday that ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric had arrived in Moscow for a meeting with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
