Before the beginning of the war, 2.5 million tons of ammonium per year was being transported via a pipeline from Russia’s Volga region to Odessa. Ammonium is the most important raw material for fertilizers used widely in agriculture. Since February 24th, 2022, this pipeline has been closed. To avoid further negative impact on world grain production the UN has called on Russia to reactivate this pipeline, and export ammonium in terms of the Black Sea Grain Initiative. The Russians have not yet responded.
