Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy told CNN that a counteroffensive against the occupying Russian forces needs to begin sooner, in June. Consequently, he urged Western allies to expedite the supply of weapons for this mission.

“If our counteroffensive unfolds later, a larger portion of our territory will be mined,” Zelenskiy said, adding that he wished it had occurred much earlier. “We provide our adversary with the opportunity and time to place additional mines and prepare their defensive lines.”

The Ukrainian President has long lobbied the United States and other Western allies to provide his military with more cutting-edge equipment, such as F-16 fighter jets and longer-range missiles manufactured in the United States.

In the CNN interview, he repeated this, and he also expressed gratitude to the United States and its European allies for their assistance.

Without going into too much detail, Zelenskiy said last week that progress had been made “in all directions” in the counteroffensive but that it was moving more slowly than desired.
