The French and Chinese foreign ministers, Catherine Colonna and Qin Gang, met on Wednesday and “developed an economic relationship that is both stronger and more balanced,” according to a statement released by the French foreign ministry.

The meeting occurred weeks after the ambassador of China to France made controversial remarks about Ukraine following Emmanuel Macron’s visit to China in April.

In the meeting with her Chinese counterpart, Colonna “reminded her of China’s important role in convincing Russia to return to full compliance with the U.N. Charter, particularly regarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” according to a statement released by her ministry.

In a separate statement, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang recommended the two nations work together to strengthen transnational supply chains and discover new avenues of collaboration. He added that the two countries should cooperate more closely in international affairs and help solve problems like the one in Ukraine.

Qin continued, saying that China is willing to work with France and other countries around the world in order to promote high-quality development and a high-level of opening up.
